AbstractThe finding of sympatric smelts Hypomesus japonicus and H. olidus in a brackish-water lake of
lagoon origin on Bolshoi Shantar Island is reported. Their morphological description is presented. Some dif-
ferences from migratory ecotopes testify that the two populations belong to a resident form. A comparison of
new data with published data (Lindberg and Dulkeit, 1929) indicates that H. japonicus was formerly recorded
on the Shantarskie Islands under the name of Mesopus olidus, while H. olidus was found and investigated by
us for the first time. It is assumed that differences between species of the genus Hypomesus, according to a set
of osteological and meristic characters, are a consequence of pedomorphosis.
